No matter how busy you get, you still find time to exercise. Whether it’s cycling to work or a quick stint in the gym before getting home in the evening, you somehow make sure you don’t go too long without taking care of your physical fitness.

But what about the fitness of your career? Do you ever give that much thought?

If you don’t, you’re not alone. It is said that the average person spends more time planning their annual holiday than their career. You may smile, but when you think that you are likely to spend 90,000 hours at work over your lifetime it does seem a bit strange.

So, what can you do?

Well, there’s a reason people don’t spend a lot of time planning their careers anymore and it begins with “U”. Uncertainty. Gone are the days of the 5 year plan, when you could confidently say where you wanted to be in your career – nowadays who knows what will happen 5 months from now never mind 5 years! So instead people do nothing. That is until they need so.

There is an alternative! A middle ground between having a fixed plan (5 year or otherwise) and doing nothing. And that is to start running your career like a business – becoming your own CEO – even if you are employed. This means working “on” your career as well as “in” it and crafting a path that aligns with who you are & what you have to offer.
